It's finally time – after three and a half years of light-hearted laughs, serious studies of social issues and some truly heartwarming friendships, On My Block is coming to an end.

The Netflix coming-of-age could only last so long before the talented young cast outgrew their roles, and with a release date now confirmed, we'll soon get to say goodbye to Monse, Jamal and the rest of the squad.

However it's not all bad news – every end is a new beginning it seems as Netflix has ordered a spin-off called Freeridge, which will see a brand new squad navigate high school in the titular Los Angeles neighbourhood.

For now though, let's hope season four ends on a high – the show has previously received acclaim for its diverse cast, fresh performances and realistic portrayal of inner-city life.

Read on for everything we know about season four of On My Block.

On My Block season 4 release date

It's official – On My Block's fourth and final season will be released on Monday 4th October 2021.

The last three seasons dropped in March on consecutive years – but this of course did not happen with season four due to disruptions to production caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Filming began in March 2020, with Diego Tinoco showing off his new hairdo now his character Cesar is head of the Santos gang.

Shooting wrapped in June with many of the stars taking to social media to lament their last day on set.

Jamal actor Brett Gray also appeared to finish on the same day:

While this may be the last we see of Jasmine and Jamal, it's not the last we'll see of their bustling LA neighbourhood – Netflix has ordered a spin-off called Freeridge that will be more female-focused and feature a new core four.

On My Block season 4 cast

All the key cast members are expected to return – which includes Sierra Capri (American Skin) as headstrong group leader Monse Finnie, Diego Tinoco (Teen Wolf) as gang affiliate Cesar Diaz, Jason Genoa (Logan) as maths whiz Ruby Martinez and Brett Gray (When They See Us) as geeky Jamal Turner.

The Middle's Jessica Marie Garcia is also likely to return as Ruby's love interest Jasmine Flores, as is Julio Macias' gang member Spooky Diaz after getting promoted to the main cast in season three.

Peggy Blow (Dexter), who plays Ruby's eccentric Abuela, has been promoted to a series regular also for season four.

On My Block season 4 plot

Season three saw the friends kidnapped by the Santos gang and forced to find the mob's founder Lil' Ricky, and ended with a surprise two-year time jump which saw our favourite squad members no longer in touch and busy with their own lives.

"It's probably one of the most realistic endings that I think we've had," Capri told Entertainment Tonight about the season three ending. "People evolve and they grow, and sometimes they grow apart. The way that you were two years ago is different [from how you are now]."

We therefore expect much of season four will be filling in the gaps that saw such a radical change for the lifelong friends. The biggest unanswered questions from the flash-forward include how Spooky apparently got out of gang life, why Jamal is back to playing football and what happened between Ruby and Jamal that caused the two to stop speaking.

Most importantly, however, we want to know why the squad has grown apart – and if they'll reunite in time for a satisfying finale.

Cesar's future was easily the most shocking transformation of all after replacing his brother as the head of the Santos gang – an ending Tinoco said was "heartbreaking" to read.

However he's also hoping his character could still end up with Monse, and added that he has big hopes for season four.

"I trust the writers and the story isn't over yet, just like life," Tinoco told ET. "I mean, he's dealt with so much traumatic stuff going on in his life... so much trauma that you're gonna have a little bit of a crash."

Many American fans have noticed that the show's age rating has changed from a TV-14 to TV-MA - which could be a hint that season four will be much darker than previous instalments.

In January 2021 the show's social media accounts jumped on the popular spoilers without context trend, teasing important elements of the upcoming season without an explanation. Your guess is as good as ours as to what these objects could mean, but the appearance of a crashed car and flowers has many fans worried about a possible death...
